Hoover Innovation Summit to unite tech community this week

HOOVER, Ala. (WIAT) – Happening this week, the City of Hoover is hosting a conference to get the tech community together. This is the second year the city is hosting an event like this.

Jackson Pruett, economic development coordinator for the City of Hoover, joined the CBS 42 Morning News live on Saturday to talk about Thursday’s event. He said Hoover’s tech scene is growing across a range of industries from software companies to medical device and pharmaceutical companies.

“It’s small but it’s growing,” Pruett said. “We are really excited about this event to really bring people together.”

Pruett said the goal is to convene not only entrepreneurs and people in tech, but also elected officials, economic developers, the business community, and members of the public.

Last year’s focus was cyber security. This year it’s life sciences and health tech. Pruett said there’s a lot of momentum in the sciences and health tech industries locally and nationally.

“We’re excited to convene people and elevate that industry, have some great conversations,” Pruett said. “We’ve had technology companies Hoover for a long time, but they often kind of just been under the radar. The purpose of this event and some of our other efforts are really to elevate them in our community and show our appreciation for these companies, the jobs that they create, the investments that they’re making.”

Pruett said there are plenty of opportunities in the years to come in Hoover and Shelby County to grow the tech scene and attract new entrepreneurs and new tech companies to the city.

The Hoover Innovation Summit is on Thursday, Feb. 29 from 8 a.m. until 12 p.m. at the Hoover Library Theater.

“We’ve got some entrepreneurs speaking startups, some mid-size companies in the medical device space, and then we’re also going to highlight a new development in Riverchase that we’re working on our Hoover Riverchase Health Tech District,” Pruett said.

Pruett said the impact that that industry has is not only in Hoover, but in the state and across the region. He said the industry is fast-growing with tons of jobs and he is hopeful attendees can get a newfound appreciation for what the industry can become for the City of Hoover.
