College of the Desert is investing nearly $1.5 million in broadband internet towers and wireless modems for students in the eastern Coachella Valley.

The Board of Trustees voted 5-0 Friday to approve two contracts that will provide internet capability for students as far as North Shore and Salton City and to distribute 1,000 devices for students to access high-speed internet.

The contracts are with Pacific Lightwave, Inc., an internet provider based in Palm Desert that has a private broadband network that extends westward to Morongo Valley and northward to Yucca Valley and Joshua Tree, according to the college.
