Rocky Mount, N.C. — A new effort to install a fiber network could soon bring high speed broadband throughout Rocky Mount.

But some living in rural areas outside the city limits have concerns that the digital divide in their neighborhoods will keep growing.

Federal data from the National Telecommunications and Information Administration showed in some areas of Rocky Mount over 90% of households have internet access. But in multiple other neighborhoods, the data shows more than 40% of homes don’t have any broadband at all.

A tech executive “exploited” his access to computer data at the White House to find “derogatory information” about President Donald Trump, a special counsel appointed during the Trump administration said in a court filing Friday.

John Durham, appointed by then-Attorney General William Barr in 2020 to probe the origins of the FBI’s investigation of Russian election interference, said “Tech Executive-1,” not named in the filing but first identified by The New York Times as Rodney Joffe, used his access to domain name system, or DNS, data to compile information about which computers and servers the White House servers were communicating

Amazon’s older Kindles will start to lose their internet access in December

Amazon’s Kindle e-readers with built-in 3G will begin to lose the ability to connect to the internet on their own in the US in December, according to an email sent to customers on Wednesday. The change is due to mobile carriers transitioning from older 2G and 3G networking technology to newer 4G and 5G networks. For older Kindles without Wi-Fi, this change could mean not connecting to the internet at all.

Escambia County Takes Next Step Toward Broadband Internet Network; Thousands Could Get True High Speed Access : NorthEscambia.com

Escambia County is moving forward with plans toward a countywide broadband network following a study that found the county has large high speed internet gaps.

A late 2020 assessment by Magellan Advisors found that almost all residents in the more northern parts of Escambia County do not have any access to the internet at speeds defined as broadband by the Federal Communications Commission.

The Escambia County Commission recently voted unanimously enter into a contract with Magellan for $645,000 in CARES Act funding for design engineering, detailed business and financial planning, along with grant services and applications in a major step
