Health Ministry launches revamped COVID-19 tracking app

The Health Ministry announced a new version of its contact tracing app on Monday, promising an array of new features, which it said would help boost its accuracy.

A key tool in containing the spread is epidemiological, or contact, tracing — investigations that seek to identify and send into self-quarantine all those who may have been exposed to patients in the days before they were diagnosed, hopefully cutting off the spread.

DHS Wants COVID-19 Response Tech that Protects Health and Privacy

As the number of new daily COVID-19 cases continues to climb, the Homeland Security Department’s tech wing—the Science and Technology Directorate, or S&T—released a call through its Silicon Valley Innovation Program for new technologies and processes focused on protecting employees’ and citizens’ health and privacy.

The new call for proposals is being issued against S&T’s ongoing SVIP Other Transaction Solicitation, a multiyear broad agency agreement using the agency’s other transaction authority—a procurement method outside the Federal Acquisition Regulation often used to tap nontraditional tech companies to work on edge problems.

Many newsrooms across the U.S. will be quieter places when journalists return to their workplace after the coronavirus lockdowns end.

COVID-19 has ripped through the industry. In the United States alone, over 36,000 journalists have lost their jobs, been furloughed or had their pay cut.

Analysis by Kristen Hare, a reporter at the journalism institute Poynter, shows that more than 200 newsrooms and media groups have been affected by lay-offs and other cost-saving measures, including mergers and reduced print runs. Local journalism has been hit particularly hard.

By 3 to 1, Americans reject Trump’s push to reopen schools despite COVID-19 risk

With coronavirus infections spreading fast and COVID-19 deaths climbing yet again, most Americans say the country is not ready to send children back to school this fall — and they emphatically reject every aspect of President Trump’s new effort to force public schools to fully reopen, according to the latest Yahoo News/YouGov poll.  

The survey, which was conducted between July 11 and 14, found a remarkable consensus on the issue of school reopenings that transcended party lines, geographic boundaries and demographic divisions.
